How to Loosen a Door Hinge (When the Screw Won't Budge)
In March 2024, our shop got a call that is the reason I'm writing this. A commercial client needed thirty cabinet doors hung before an 8 a.m. inspection. The doors had already been machined with a Freud door router bit set and finished a week earlier. Everything looked fine until the last hinge on the last door wouldn't loosen. The lead installer reached for an impact driver. Five seconds later, the screw head was a rounded, shiny mess. He looked at me and asked, 'How do I loosen a door hinge now?'
The real issue wasn't the hinge. We were about to fix the wrong thing.
The Surface Problem: The Hinge Screw Won't Loosen
Search for 'how to loosen a door hinge' and you see the same advice: spray lubricant, turn harder. That works for a rusty bolt. It doesn't work for a driver mismatch.
Most hinge hardware now uses cross-head or hex screws, and not all cross-head screws are Phillips. Pozidriv looks almost identical to Phillips but has extra radial lines. A Phillips bit in a Pozidriv screw will cam out under load, and the cam-out is what rounds the head. That is why a hinge screw can look stripped even when it arrived at the job in perfect condition.
The Deeper Issue: A Stuck Screw Is Usually a Diagnosis Problem
Everything I'd read about stuck screws said to apply more penetrating oil and more force. In my own work, that advice skipped the most important step. The screw was rarely seized by corrosion. It was under tension, or the driver did not fit.
I check three things before touching the screw head:
- Is the hinge under load? If the door is still hanging, the top hinge is carrying weight. The screw threads are pinched by the frame. A wedge under the door takes the load off the screw before you turn it.
- Is the bit the right shape and size? A bit that is too small, worn, or being used in the wrong drive will not seat fully. The driver turns; the screw does not.
- Do you need to loosen the hinge, or adjust it? A door that binds on the latch side may only need a small adjustment. Loosening the mounting screws on a sagging door can make the sag worse.
What Happens When You Just Crank on It
I have handled enough rush jobs to know what a stripped hinge screw costs. It turns a twenty-minute fix into a service call, and it can turn a service call into a trip to the framer. In 2023, we scrapped a $2,400 prefinished door because someone forced a screw with the wrong bit. The screw head was not the problem. The assumption that more torque would help caused the damage.
In contract work, the cost is not just the door. A missed inspection can trigger a daily penalty. On one project, the delay penalty was $750 per day. The cause? A hinge screw with a rounded head. The right bit and ten minutes of patience would have prevented it.
How to Loosen a Door Hinge Without Damaging Anything Else
Here is the sequence I use when a hinge screw won't move. It isn't glamorous, but it works on a deadline.
- Take the load off the door. Put a wedge under the door near the hinge side, or have someone lift the door slightly. You want the hinge leaves free before you try to turn a screw.
- Identify the drive before choosing the bit. Clean the screw head and look at the pattern. If you see a cross with small radial lines between the arms, it is Pozidriv, not Phillips. If it is square, use Robertson. If it is a star shape, use Torx. For hex head bolts, use a socket.
- Use a good multi bit screwdriver set. A multi bit screwdriver set is useful only when the bits are sharp and fully seated. Pick the bit that fits without wobble. If the bit rocks in the head, find another one.
- For hex-head hinge bolts, reach for a socket. Commercial hinges often use hex-head bolts. A 1/2 socket set metric will cover most metric fasteners used in imported hardware. If the fastener is SAE, switch to the correct SAE socket.
- Break the paint film first. Score around the screw head with a utility knife if paint is present. Tap the top of the screwdriver once with a mallet. That shock can break the paint or oxide seal, then turn normally.
- Turn counterclockwise and check every half turn. Keep the driver straight and fully seated. If it resists after two firm turns, stop. Apply penetrating oil and let it sit. If it still won't move, you may need a manual impact driver or screw extractor.
If your goal is to stop a door from rubbing, don't loosen all the mounting screws. On a standard hinge, loosen the frame-side screws by an eighth of a turn, adjust the door, then tighten them back before testing. On cabinet hinges with adjustment cams, leave the mounting screws tight and move the cam instead.
If a screw turns freely and does not come out, the hole is stripped. Don't immediately reach for a longer screw. Fill the hole with a glued dowel, drill a clean pilot, then install the correct screw. That is the boring fix that lasts.
Respect the Boundary Between Tools and Trades
I use Freud router bits because they cut cleanly and predictably. The router bits Freud makes for raised panels and shaker doors are precise, but they don't install hinges. A Freud door router bit set produces the door; a driver bit and socket set handle the hardware. Each one does a specific job, which is exactly what you want from specialized tools.
If a hinge problem falls outside what I can fix with the correct bit and a clean pilot hole, I say so. A vendor who tells a customer 'this needs a different specialist' is easier to trust than one who pretends one toolbag can solve every mounting issue. Boundaries make recommendations reliable.
The next time someone asks how to loosen a door hinge, ask what is actually resisting. On my job, the answer was a worn bit on a Pozidriv screw. Once we switched to the right bit, the screw came out smoothly, the door shipped at six in the morning, and the inspection passed. The lesson was not about strength. It was about standing back and learning the problem before touching it.
