The Cost Controller's Checklist for Buying Freud Cutting Tools (Without Wasting Budget)

If you're the person who signs off on tooling purchases for a woodworking shop, you know the drill: production asks for 'the good Freud bits,' the sales rep sends a quote, and the budget gets blamed later. This checklist is for the procurement decisions I've been making over the past seven years as a procurement manager in a 60-person cabinet shop. I manage a tooling budget in the $70-80k range, have negotiated with 30+ vendors, and documented every order in our cost tracking system. Our shop builds custom millwork, so we see solid hardwood, plywood, MDF, and laminate. Each material sends a different signal to the tool buyer. A blade that saves $20 but takes 10 days to arrive is not a win if it stops the install crew.

Three Cost Traps to Avoid

  1. Buying more tool than the volume justifies. I recommend Freud Industrial grade for production shops because the carbide and geometry hold up.   2. Using one blade for too many jobs. A track saw blade is not a miter blade. Cross-cutting trim with a rip grind will shorten carbide life and chip the edge. Keep the job-specific blades in the right machines.
  3. Forgetting the parts of a trim job that are not cutting tools. If you're pricing a trim install, budget for the nail gun.
